Is the copycat character designs in Boruto too lazy ?

  1. Please let this be /s.

Shikamaru looked just as close with Shikaku. And Hoki’s main character trait is that he idolizes Kakashi and tries to be like him in whatever way possible.

  2. I can’t believe that Shikamaru copied Shikadai’s design in Boruto. How lazy

Should have been more original like Hoki copying Kakashi or Metal copying Lee

  3. Yes. BUT I think it’s a victim of circumstances.

I don’t think Kishimoto ever planned for Boruto to be its own series; so the vast majority of these characters were supposed to appear JUST for the epilogue. Since this doesn’t devote a ton of time to explore them, he had to make sure you could tell as much about these characters from a single look as you could, including their parentage (especially Shikadai and Inojin who, unless I’m mistaken, don’t even appear with their parents in the epilogue).

So he gave them very similar designs so that you could tell “oh, that’s THEIR kid” without being told.

Then the Boruto anime got greenlight and we’re stuck with those shitty designs.

  4. It’s genetic for two of them. It’s especially strong with the Nara clan, and them having the same hairstyles is how you recognize that they are Nara. Shikadai has Temari‘s eyes, which gives him a different look from his father.

Lee intentionally styled his hair after Guy and he trained his son the same way as Guy trained him. It’s passing the torch from generation to generation. At the very least, Metal Lee has different eyes and shorter hair, which means he’s not exactly copying Lee and Guy.

The middle one is deliberately styling himself after Kakashi. There was a whole episode of kids cosplaying as famous Shinobis, so why even include him in this argument?

  5. Yes for the two father-son.

It’d be way more interesting for the sons to develop a distinct style on their own rather than just being a copy then having certain people rationalize it as “it’s genetics”. Little do they know an offspring can be very different both genetically, personality and styling.

I don’t think of the Kakashi wannabe is a lazy design.

  6. Shikamaru and rock lee are literally parents to the “copycats” and they look like their parents too.
And that kid idolises Kakashi so he tries to look like him

  7. Naruto fans try and find any reason to hate on Boruto – Difficulty: Easy

Listen, I dislike me some Boruto just as much as the next guy, but this? This post, right here? Is fucking stupid and lazy criticism.

  8. Nah I actually like it cuz other characters did the same..gai was a copy of dai..Naruto was similar to
Minato in looks..kakashi looks like his dad.and he wears a mask..garaas dad and garaa and kankuro like similar and temari looks like her mother ..so it fits the rest of the story and irl

  9. They are lazy. There’s a difference between taking inspiration and straight copying. The new designs do not have their own identity. You can obviously tell where they’re from. What would be ideal they get lightly inspired by the original designs but combine them with a a design philosophy that is completely unique to the new character

  10. Shikamaru looks exactly like Shikaku too. It’s genetics??? Shikadai’s has Nara features but Temari’s eyes.

Houki’s original design was different. It changed because his story of respecting and trying to emulate Kakashi evolved.

Metal and Lee don’t look alike at all 🤣 they just have the green jumpsuit and the bowl cut hair. Same as Lee and Gai???

    Boruto mindless hate man….

  11. Shikadai and Metal Lee are their sons. Not copycat. Just like Shikamaru and Shikaku.

Hoki wears a mask and a slanted headband because he idolizes Kakashi. That’s not copycat either because without those two things he’d look nothing like Kakashi.

  12. yes but it was also lazy in the original. my fave parent to child design was actually sakura’s parents and sakura. THAT seemed way more interesting and felt like you could see where the features came from but they weren’t exactly the same.

  13. Parents looking like their kids makes sense though. And aside from Metal – who has a narrative reason as to why – all wear different clothing.

I’d say that the only time the series does have a legitimate criticism with this is the “one-off” or background Uchiha and Hyuga characters. I get that families look the same, and these characters aren’t designed to be especially important or memorable, so it is excusable to a degree…but seeing a room of like 30 Uchiha or Hyuga and they are all dressed the same with like 3 haircuts between them just seems a little too similar. Pretty much the only time that criticism is even remotely valid and it’s still not a big issue.

  14. For the offspring, it’s ok if *some* of them look pretty identical to a parent. That happens in real life. Especially in Shikadai’s case, since Shikamaru also looked just like his dad, and in general Nara men look very similar.

The Kakashi fanboy…I mean it makes sense but he needs an episode where he stops trying to be someone else because it’s just embarrassing for him.

  15. 2 are just genetics and one is just someone trying to emulate their ideal.

There is a meme that Shikamaru is just the preevoled Pokemon evolution of Shikaku. If we add Shikadai to the mix we now have a 3 stage evolution. If I remember right there was a photo going around that Itachi is just Sasuke with stress lines on his face and a different hairstyle. With Sasuke Restuden being animated Sarada is just Sakura with black hair, glasses, and no Bakugou seal.

Lee and Guy may not be biologically related but there were theories the pair were father and son based on how much alike they are with they both look and act.

Hoki is just your average fanboy that admired Kakashi so much as the 6th Hokage he copied him. Konohamaru was doing a similar thing with Naruto years ago
