He was a good villain and a perfect heel for Itachi and Sasuke.
Both characters are better by proxy of Danzo existing.

I get what they were trying to do with Danzo, the guy who made the dirty choices for the good of the village. But he was just a fuck up. All his ‘achievements’ made things worse for the world and the village. Any good that he caused was accidental on his part. The only reason he lasted so long was the Hokages, especially Hiruzen, never slapping him down.
