I am no expert but from what I have heard marketing a movie for release can cost almost as much as making the movie itself (although that is probably less of the case for big budget blockbusters). So if they know they have a bomb on their hands it doesn’t make sense to spend more money releasing it, at most you quietly offload it to streaming (ex New Mutants) but even then it could tarnish your brand (ex how much Morbious destroyed any hope for future Sony super hero movies)
