  1. I did find it enjoyable even though what I’m about to say might suggest I didn’t…but there are just so many little ways that I think it could have been better.

It started off great, I loved Nat tricking Ross and the nice melancholic tone when she was going off grid.

    Yelena was great, of course.

I liked Red Guardian but he was basically comic relief and served no purpose other than telling Nat where Melina was and then getting his ass kicked by Taskmaster.

Taskmaster was pretty good in the first fight with Nat on the bridge then wasted for the remainder of the film, presumably so she could be made another “victim” along with basically every character besides Dreykov. Even Melina got a pass despite it being impossible for Dreykov to have done what he did without her.

It would have been much more interesting for Melina to have stayed evil, using Nat to take down Dreykov so she can take over…or actually being the real power all along.

The pheromone thing didn’t really work as it’s too easy to think of ways around it. But Nat breaking her own septum was pretty neat, as was the fight with the other widows.

The flying base jarred with me for some reason and seemed like it was just thrown in for spectacle. It should have been an underground base.

The whole thing should have been darker, grittier and not tied up in such a neat bow.

  2. Pros: Glad to see Black Widow finally get a solo film. Scarlett Johansson in particular deserved it.

Florence Pugh was good as Yelena.

Cons: Not only was it much too late, it came after the character died, making the film feel somewhat unnecessary.

Didn’t like the change to Taskmaster’s origin.

Film was ultimately just “Ok”. No urge to see it again.

  3. Disappointed.

Different characters have different flavours, which means their solo films can come with really varied styles and still fit into the wider universe. The guardians have their goofy retro star wars comedy. Ant Man has a heist vibe. Strange has the psychedelic horror edge. I could go on, but you see my point.

So when black widow got her own solo prequel, I was so excited for a SPY FILM set in the MCU. That’s her whole THING. She barely got to explore it as part of a larger, not-so-subtle team, and now she’s dead. Her occasional espionage has always been as a support character. This was her chance to carve a really unique mark on the universe. She even had the building blocks of a great backstory to explore with meeting Hawkeye.

Instead we got one of the most run-of-the-mill, mediocre action movies I have ever seen. It was set in this weird timeframe which didn’t quite understand the concept of a prequel, so it didn’t actually tell us much more about her time before the avengers. The villains were boring, the set pieces were nothing we haven’t seen before, and we didn’t even get a moment of this dark side of the character which has been eluded to since her introduction.

The only saving grace were some fun characters, who could just has easily been introduced earlier on in her timeline as part of a more widow-esque spy thriller which actually told us more about her character.

But that’s just my opinion. If you enjoyed the film, please don’t be offended by what I have to say!

  4. I enjoyed it for what it was.

    But.

    I watched it once.

Very few marvel movies can I say this about. I’ve watched nearly every marvel movie multiple times. This one is one of the few exceptions.

  5. Completely missed potential with Taskmaster. Should’ve come out earlier. The pheromone lock was a bit… bad. You’re telling me this old guy is still producing the same pheromones as, what, 10-20 years ago when the lock was put in place? And it stops functioning when a nerve is severed as opposed to- you know what, it’s poorly written mental blocks/ brainwashing. I do find it funny that the Russian flying fortress tech is so flimsy that it all blows up when one or two things fail.

  6. Pros: Yelena

    Cons: Not enough Yelena

Also where does Nat get off telling Yelena they can’t steal a car when she stole a dudes truck back in Winter Soldier with Captain America?

  7. A movie that’s not even about its titular character that tries to pretend it’s more than it is.

Pros: seeing Natasha one last time (I guess), Yelena

Cons: dealing with a serious subject superficially, whitewashing a couple of child groomers, basically only serves to introduce Yelena, bad CGI (that last part is forgivable)

  8. It may not be the best mcu movie, but it is enjoyable. For me the movie was good overall. It was very fun to watch, it introduced my favorite character, the comedy was good, etc.

  9. Pros: great performances, introduced us to Yelena and Red Guardian, who are great.

Cons: we should’ve gotten the movie earlier, action was meh, CGI wasn’t very good, and Taskmaster was barely used in the film.

Ultimately, it’s one of the worst MCU movies to date for me, but at least it did introduce us to new characters who I hope to see more of.

  10. Loved it. Yelena was amazing. Loved the “family” dynamic and overall story. Excellent performances by all of them.

A bit disappointed with the Red Room and Taskmaster execution from a character standpoint. It just didn’t read well

  11. Forgettable.

It wasn’t awful, but it wasn’t the Black Widow story that needed to be told. We needed a kind of origin story, and instead it just filled in a gap no one had questions about.

  12. Overall I like the movie. I think it’s very rewatchable. I like all the main characters, save one. The main complaint I have, and it’s a big one, was Taskmaster. I don’t care that she’s a woman, or that they tried to give her a plausible explanation for photoreflexive memory. What I HATED is that she was mute. That character has too much potential, especially now that Deadpool is in the MCU, to honor the evil/smartass merc from the comics. Using an iconic character but taking away its ability to talk was a mistake.

  13. Pros: I love Black Widow so getting more content was great, I liked getting more of her story, and of course Yelena was excellent. I also thought a lot of the fight scenes were great. I enjoyed the overall plot, Nat breaking her own nose was awesome, and the banter between the sisters was perfect.

Cons: I feel like this isn’t a popular opinion, but… the biggest one for me was the parental figures. I just could NOT overlook the fact that they were both heavily involved in a child trafficking system where they (very coldly) handed off Nat and Yelena to be abused and mutilated, and then we are supposed to just accept them as a family unit by the end of the movie. For me, this is by far the biggest con and the thing that frustrates me the most, as there were so many ways they could have worked around this.

  14. Pros: Yelena, most of the action scenes, Natasha, Taskmaster for a majority of the film, Dreykov, the score, Infinity War outfit, post-credits scene

Cons: Red Guardian, Taskmaster reveal toward the end, moments that could have been really serious and led to great character development and interactions turned into comedic beats.

For me, it sort of feels like there was another Black Widow movie we should have gotten before this one, in order for it to work. The Taskmaster reveal especially gives me that feeling, since we as the audience don’t know anything about Antonia, whereas with someone like Bucky, we know who he was, we know Steve cares a lot about him, so when we get the reveal, we understand what’s at stake for Steve. Here, not so much.

  15. 3 scenes for me. Nat falling in Budapest, the explosive arrow in the chase scene, & the dive sequence at the end. Other than those I liked it. Still have the movie at like 8.5 but I do wish it happened sooner.

  16. It was an okay film. I will not watch it again. I really wasn’t too happy with it.Trailer was awesome. I think they wanted another winter solider but it didn’t feel as well done. I think they are setting up a dark avengers story and that was the point of this film, to establish her sister.

  17. When doing a prequel, it’s very hard to make any of the danger feel substantial, especially when we (the audience) know her fate. There was also far too much credence given to the theory that it was actually Yelena who sacrificed herself, trying to give Scarlett Johansson a chance to come back to the role.

It was actually a solid origin story for Florence Pugh’s Yelena, while also a lackluster sendoff for Scarlett Johansson.

Foreknowledge of a character’s fate is a troubling issue in storytelling. Especially so if the character’s fate was felt as deeply by fans as Natasha’s death.

Another IP that managed to overcome the trouble of foreknowledge in storytelling was Star Trek: Discover and the spin-off/sequel series, Strange New Worlds. They had a uniquely inspired way to address the trouble with foreknowledge of a terrible fate: Make the character aware of their fate. The character’s awareness of his fate became an overarching plot that was woven into choice episodes. It worked surprisingly well as a character study of being burdened with such foreknowledge.

  18. **Pros:** The performances are pretty top notch, Yelena and Red Guardian as characters overall, **(Please don’t assault me)** Taskmaster works thematically within the movie she is in. I get wanting to see more of her personality, and I’m sure we will, but within the context of this movie she is perfectly used. The action is solid, and the fight choreography is awesome, and I really like the commentary on not only strained family, but also of female freedom. Also, just the dynamic of the family is a joy to watch.

**Cons:** The alternate ending is better by a mile, and it sort of upsets me that they felt the need to replace it. Drakov absolutely works thematically as a character, but as opposed to Taskmaster who shouldn’t be able to have a personality **thematically,** his character had no such hang ups, so he could have been a bit more nuanced beyond someone who just wants control (Great thematically, not great on a character level.)

**Non-factors:** CGI. Some instances of CGI look a bit rough, but alternatively I’m sure there are more instances in the movie of CGI so good that I didn’t even give it a second thought, so if I had to pro or con it, it would probably wind up being a pro just on ratio alone, but I’ll put it here.

I’m not sure how I necessarily feel about this movie in terms of a farewell to Natasha…Because on one hand…is it? Like when people watch it chronologically it’s just going to be viewed as another classic Black Widow Adventure, **but** within the context of the film’s release, it was sort of a goodbye (hence why the OG ending should have stayed), **BUT** This movie **PAIRED** with Hawkeye is sort of a perfect goodbye to the character, so it’s complicated and thus I will put it here.

  19. It was a fun movie that was long overdue and should have happened earlier. Not without it’s problems though. Not the best Marvel had put out, but definitely midtier which is not a bad thing.

  20. I… didn’t really like it. I definitely think it’s the weakest Phase 4 movie and one of the worst MCU movies thus far, but it’s not really BAD. It’s okay, and it has it’s pros and good aspects, and it has bad ones.

  21. Pros: the opening credits and Yelena.
Cons: Taskmaster being a complete disappointment, CGI and the fact that the movie came out about 5 years later that it should have imo

  22. First half of the movie was phenomenal.

The CGI was a bit lacking at times on the floating city.

The only thing I really disliked that would’ve required a change, not just more time to improve, was the origin of Taskmaster. She also shouldn’t have been mute.

  23. Red Guardian was underused.

    Taskmaster was depicted poorly

    Dreykov was a weak villian.

I dont remember several characters names,
    including two on the poster.

Yelanna was better in hawkeye by a mile.

    CGI was overused.

Came too late but happy to see a black widow solo movie.

Would rather liked to see Budapest or Red Guardian exploits instead.

General Ross was good in the movie.

  24. Still an awful movie. Besides learning she had a ‘family’ which is a big question mark on how or why this would’ve never came up. Why not bring them to Wakanda? Fate of the universe kind of thing seems kind of important. Overall brings up more questions than answers. Having just the battalion of Widows would’ve been a boon in and of itself I’d think.

Why was Natasha the kid we saw in the opening? Why. Should’ve stuck with the old school backstory of her being a brainwashed Natalia that broke free but obviously having had her memories replaced. Maybe after her affair with Winter Soldier was discovered. And have her real memories flash trough throughout the movie.

The poser joke went on for way too long. Seriously I feel like I’m the only one who doesn’t like Yalena and her ‘jokes’. Did I like her more in Hawkeye? Yes. But that was more down to Clint and their fight in the Finale.

  25. definitely one of my favorite MCU films. It goes without saying that they really did Natasha dirty by not giving her a solo film trilogy before killing her off and it was odd to release one after the fact, but I still loved it as a stand-alone story. I loved the family dynamics and the relationship between Nat and Yelena. Obviously this movie didn’t do much of anything for the current state of the MCU but it was really enjoyable on its own even though it was long overdue

  26. This is my lowest rated film in the MCU and in genea that I’ve watched

It didn’t really feel like a spy movie at all, everything felt so basic from the cinematography to acting to plot to characters and terrible accents.

Marvel very clearly likes making fun of fat people going through emotional problems instead of addressing it because that’s twice they’ve done it. Red Guardian is the highlight from the film for me though but in a pool of shit, anything will stand out

Plot armour galore, it’s never been so thick. Even Game of Thrones season 8 was as thick as the plot armour in this. And Scarlet Johanson was just Scarlet Johanson – the way she was acting and the words she was saying made it seem like it was just her, didn’t resemble the comic character at all but that’s the case with most of the long standing cast now like Mackie and Ruffalo, they just play themselves for the most part.

But the biggest problem was I didn’t care about any of it because Nat was already dead. I knew how her story would end. There was so much potential for a gritty “Atomic Blonde” esque story in the Cold War about her in Russia and Budapest with the Winter Guard and Hawkeye and Taskmaster but they fumbled it so hard

  27. I’ve seen it twice now and I don’t think I’m ever going back again.

I really enjoyed Yelena’s character. I think she’s funny and has tons of potential. She was hilarious in Hawkeye too, and had great chemistry with Kate Bishop.

The Red Guardian was pretty much an excuse not to train David Harbour for an actual high intensity action scene. Maybe because of Stranger Things’ schedule not giving him much time, I don’t know.

The plot undermines Bucky’s entire arc by saying that you can get over being forced to kill people against your will by getting sprayed in the face with red fairy dust. My boy’s out there with a diary trying to make amends for people he’s killed while not being in the right state of mind, while the Widows just get up and walk away.

The CGI was decent at best and sketchy at worst. The scene where Yelena makes Dreykov’s helicopter-plane explode is hilariously bad.

And Nat is actually superhuman at this point. The kind of falls and injuries she’s withstood through this movie is some Spider-Man level shit.

This movie was probably the most unnecessary addition to the MCU. It didn’t give a background to the old line “you and I remember Budapest very differently.” The ONLY thing it really does is give way to a new Black Widow, and I think that could have been done by focusing a few more scenes on Yelena and giving her some flashbacks to flesh out her story in Hawkeye, rather than an entirely poorly made movie. Melina and the Red Guardian aren’t going to appear in the new movies, nor is the Dreykov story ever going to come up, so there’s pretty much nothing to be had from Black Widow.
