Clint Barton and his brother Barney were born to an abusive family in Ohio. Their grandfather was a war hero who died in battle alongside Nick Fury and the Howling Commandos. At this young age this shaped them both in very different ways. One day, in 1983 a SHIELD agent named Jacques “Swordsman” Duquesne was injured after fighting the Zodiac Cartel. He asked the Barton’s to stay for the night, Barney allowed it since both parents were blackout drunk. When both were sober again Jaques saw them abusing Clint and Barney. Jacques arrested both of them and took in the kids.
Over the next two decades the Barton Brothers rose to prominence in SHIELD. Clint became the best archer in the world. The Swordsman dubbed his assistants “Hawkeye” and “Crossfire”. Clint is not said to have any powers but that is bullshit. However we don’t know anything about his obvious enhancements. For 3 years Barney went undercover with the Zodiac Cartel. Clint began working with Bobbi “Mockingbird” Morse, a pilot. For a brief time he worked with Carol “Warbird” Danvers. However his life would change when he went on a mission to Budapest.
As it turns out, the Zodiac Cartel was a splinter group of the Russian Red Room. On this mission Clint had to go alone. Little did he know, he was being hunted by the Red Room’s best assassin, The Black Widow. She was a feared assassin dating back to the Cold War. Clint was outgunned by a long shot so he tried reasoning with the Widow. This threw her off balance and allowed Clint to gain the upper hand. Slowly Clint broke through the Red Room’s mind control. He would allow The Widow to work with him at SHIELD and he would help her dismantle the Red Room. This was the beginning of a beautiful partnership. However there was one major casualty of this mission, Barney Barton was accidentally killed by Clint when he was undercover.
Many years later, shortly after the formation of the Avengers Nick Fury sent Swordsman to join them and report back to him. Clint and Nat would both eventually join, Bobbi even became the team’s official pilot. But this is far from where Barton’s story ends, but that’s for another day.
