my jehovah witness friends never participated in holiday stuff because of their religion, but it was always fun finding ways to cheat around it. like, it’s your birthday? what a strange coincidence i just bought you this mystery thing wrapped in newspaper for unrelated reasons. aye wanna come to our winter themed party with questionable egg-nog drinks? definitely not in the spirit of christmas ????

My Dad was a shitty parent in some of the worst ways but one of the good things he did was push back against my mothers ‘Crazy’ Christian beliefs.

He bought my an awesome daemonic costume for Halloween though my mother forbid me in going out in the costume, it was an awesome gesture.

My mother banned books with magic, my Dad bought me the Harry Potter and Artemis fowl books.

So glad I never for a second bought into the Christian fear and hate narrative
