  1. Every time I see people complain about rangers being terrible, I just shake my head as a dm who’s ranger mostly just spams Zephyr strike, and is a kobold so therefore has pack tactics… he’s yet to even go below 50% health in battle. (Hasn’t met a wizard yet tho)

  2. The only thing that I think really sucks with rangers is the beastmaster needing to use their action to command their animal companion. Tasha’s fixed it with the primal companion option, but it’s something that really should have been like that from the beginning, and should work with the normal animal options.

An easy house rule fix, but annoying that it has to be fixed to begin with.

  3. My 7 year old daughter plays a ranger in our family game. She’s easily the biggest damage dealer. To the point where two of the players have grumbled about her being overpowered.

She outdamages me about 80% of the time and I’m a Paladin.

  4. I’m only a level 5 Gloom Stalker and my DM is worried my character is too good. At range, I have the same attack mod as the barbarian and very similar damage… plus actual Gloom Stalker stuff.

Because of this, I’ve been the target of some of the bigger ranged attacks. I’m keeping a near death journal and so far I’ve come within 2 and 5 of instant death from a Black Dragon and Giant Gorilla respectively. I’m going to lean into Rogue at least until level 7 going forward.

  5. I made the amazing idea to buff the ranger in my party by allowing him to take both features from the PHB and Tasha’s, lol. (Removing the “this feature replaces X” on Tasha’s skills.)

  6. If you’re playing an Original Beastmaster using only PHB rules it’s gonna be weaker than the other classes. If you play an optimized GloomStalker or Swarm Keeper with Tasha’s optional rules you will dominate

  7. …Are people not aware that Ranger has gotten a buff in **LITERALLY** every book since the phb? Like the meme stopped being relevant with the release with Tasha. Why is everyone acting like a meme made before Tasha’s was always dumb?

  8. I 100% agree with this.. I played a module as a ranger not so long ago, and played right , not only was it really fun. I almost always dealt the most damage, except for the first few turns of big fireball etc.

  9. Throwy-boi ranger here, it’s dope. The spells complement the attacks well and gives me some added utility. Plus the Tasha’s replacement features are amazing.

  10. My only ranger i’ve ever played (a beastmaster, I it was during the UA for tasha’s but I didn’t change which familiar I wanted) tanked the shot out of a full encounter against something like 3/4 orcs at level 3 while the squishies (warlock and monk) DPSed them from afar, and they couldn’t run from me to go after them because she was that scary for them. I think when the encounter was over she was at 5 or so HP.

  11. Gloom stalker ranger is really powerful. I keep going over it every week thinking I must be remembering it wrong, but no, teleport through shadows as a bonus action, at will, indefinitely. Full on at will invisibility in dim light or darker at level three.

  12. If y’all wanna terrify you’re party, be a swarm keeper ranger. You’re swarm could be anything: angry rabbits or spiders. And you can even pick up stuff with it. So the next time the bard try’s to get the show on at the bar you can have them be carried off stage by a swarm of butterflies!

  13. You never get enough damage procs…because you can never have enough dakka. Even in a party with a fighter, two palis and a warlock for damage dealers, my ranger outdoes them on average. Turn one especially since I use gloomstalker as my sub-class. I generally soften up the big guys from the middle of our formation to damage everywhere even if we get flanked and clean up the small fry with ease. This “duh, ranger sucks” nonsense is pretty dumb. Just realize you are not the flashy person, you are a murder machine and embrace it. That’s the true power of the class. Mark, kill, repeat

  14. The last ranger I played peaked when he killed a room full of enemies by himself with two swords, a well placed arrow, and a chandelier. He was in a separate area from the rest of the party in a big siege, the others were either chasing the bbeg or trying to save the Queen (who was our rogues mom). My DM expected me to run, he said he had a chase sequence planned that would intersect with everyone else. Unfortunately I had playing my ranger as a semi suicidal maniac that just needed a reason. They’d killed the serving girl that gave him pie, so those fuckers were dead. It was the most balls tingling, desperate, beast mode fight I’d ever done, but I came out of it with 2 hp.

Now I wanna make another ranger.

  15. I thank Tasha’s for making me pay attention to them. Also Swarmkeeper is fun and my DM hates me because I just keep pushing an enemy out of ally range with my swarm, so they get opportunity attacks.
