Since PCs have +2 at lvl 1 and goes up by +1 every 4 levels, CR 1/2 and lower should have 1 less due to being the initial 4 CR levels

  1. Technically a level 1 character is a CR1/4 creature (Since it takes 4 of them to properly fit a CR1 encounter). And PHB puts their proficiency as +2 so nope.

  2. CR and creature level don’t track, there’s no direct trend between the two. But anyway…

A CR 1 monster is supposed to be tough enough to be a challenge to an entire party of level 1 PCs. Therefore if they had levels a CR 1 monster might already be level 5 or above and actually deserve a +3 proficiency bonus, which means the levels beneath it should be +2.

  3. Just roll behind the screen and LIE in a good way to your players, or send smaller groupings of monsters or even better mix in semi milestone xp for solving puzzles or successfully avoiding a tpk while still getting things done.
