Why are these guys so surprised to see the squad fly into the Cell Games? Martial artists had been flying since the OG series.

  1. I guess they were used to people throwing a log with sufficient accuracy to where they wanted to go, then jump fast enough to catch up and mount onto that log after the aforementioned throw.

  2. For starters, the older Budoukai competitions were not the major spectacles they were during the Buu arc (it was actually Mr. Satan that helped to popularize them and make them the big spectator events they are). Beforehand, they were standing audience only and they weren’t even televised, so outside of word of mouth, there really wasn’t all that much publicity to them.

Likewise, Mr. Satan readily attempted to slander the older Budoukai combatants by calling them tricksters and frauds; that they used parlor tricks and such rather than true martial arts. And with the clout he had as the winner of the 24th Budoukai (and then later with the claim of winning the Cell Games), he managed to convince most of the world that they were indeed charlatans.

  3. No they werent. Less than a handful of people were able to fly at the last tournament in Dragon Ball. Also the old ones (before Mr Satans win) werent televised. it was super niche and almost no one knew anything about it.

  4. Piccolo killed all of the strong fighters during DB. The only ones left are the Z fighters which is why it is so remarkable for Videl to learn to fly in the Buu saga.

  5. It hasn’t been used in a while in public. Plus most of it was just using something to push themselves up but just flying like that out of nowhere is probably jarring
