Comics were a very common thing back then and acceptable for any age.
Fun fact:
Captain Marvel Jr.’s look in Kingdom Come is inspired by this factoid. He goes by King Marvel and part of the ensemble is the high collar.
Elvis’ later jumpsuit-and-cape look was apparently inspired by CM Jr.
Comics used to be way more prevalent when there were less entertainment sources.
Comic books sold in the millions in the 1930’s and 40’s. Captain Marvel was the top selling comic for a number of years until National Periodicals (now DC Comics) sued Fawcett Publications into oblivion for creating a comic that resembled Superman.
He grew up in a time before every house had a TV
Maybe an obvious factoid but Elvis pumped his ‘Taking Care of Business’ or ‘TCB” tag line for years during his comeback. The TCB logo featured the same lightning bolt as CPT Marvel.
Captain Marvel was super popular in the 40s, even more than Superman for some time. Elvis grew up right around that time so of course he was into comics
The Elvis movie was super good if anyone hasn’t seen it. I too was surprised about his love for a superhero I wasn’t familiar with. The symbol made me think Shazam. I don’t think his love for comics was surprising. The most expensive comics are from the 1920s, 1930s, and 1940s when various superheroes were making debuts. It was a primary source of entertainment and reflection of culture at the time.
Let’s not forget that they made Freddy an Elvis fan in reference to this.
Haven’t seen the movie yet, but Fawcett Comics was huge during that time period, and Elvis was only a kid himself when he started out.
May i ask why did you find it surprising that Elvis was into comics? I’m just curious.
Why is that surprising? Comics are for everyone.
Damn this used to be my favorite Shazam related character too, and I wish there were only 3 kids lile the og comics unlike the multiple kids in the movies (using the New 52 comics as a source.) I wouldn’t even have minded gender or race switch, but now that theres more kids it makes it harder to focus on each one. Plus CM, Jr. used to be Billy’s friend not adopted brother, but that is also ok.
Idk I loved the old Captain Marvel comics and while I get why they aren’t following them, I wish something could be made from those pages
The fact that he was a fan of not just captain marvel, but captain marvel JUNIOR is kinda funny to me. I’m not judging, I’m a huge robin fan myself, it just seems kinda random.😅
Elvis was very likely a pedophile, so fuck him.
He was also a big fan of pedophilia and stealing music from black musicians.
The TCB lightning bolt was lifted from Capt. Marvel.
His TCB logo is the Shazam lightning bolt
I mean even Elvis was a kid at some point
The Elvis movie a great film that did such a great showing Elvis backstoy and his style very well. Still I was honestly surprised that he was a captain marvel (Shazam) fan back then.
it’s said that his iconic jumpsuits are inspired by comics like marvel jr. ☺️
Why is that surprising? Did you know Elvis personally?
but i mean like look at that man of course he loved comics
Why is that surprising to you? There wasn’t much entertainment on TV or, for that matter, radio, before Elvis.
