  1. People will suggest death IN the family, and while its an important and influential story it hasn’t aged well, i wouldn’t recommend it. Tynions ongoing joker (which it looks like you picked up) is amazing. Other than that killing joke for sure & legends of the dark knight: going sane (a 5 issue story about the joker killing batman and that curing his insanity) you will have to grab the floppies for that but they will be cheap if youre paying more than $15 for the set you’re paying too much.

  2. Oh boy, I’m a huge Joker and Batman fan. That Brubaker book was a nice touch. Can you tell me what Marvel heroes you like and why so I could recommend better?

If you like Joker, my favorite stories are:

    – The Killing Joke (Hands down the best portrayal of J, his cruelty, and his philosophy)

    – Arkham Asylum: A Serious House on Serious Earth (This is a book where the Joker takes control of the asylum and sets free the inmates, and Batman has to go inside. My favorite art in a comic ever)

    – Joker (This is a Brian Azzarello story published under DC’s Black Label division, which generally handles more adult-oriented books. It’s not a mind-blowing book or anything, but it shows a very gritty, evil Joker, and the art is superb, as is anything Lee Bermejo illustrates.)

These two stories are better with context or a good understanding of Batman, but if you have those or just want to jump in for fun, they’re iconic tales:

    – Death In the Family (Joker commits arguably the most egregious crime in comic book history. Prerequisites are familiarity with the Robins). The writing and art is dated though; full disclosure, at one point, the Joker becomes the ambassador to Iran, which is a massive tonal shift from what I mentioned above. If this throws you off, I recommend **watching “Under the Red Hood,” which is, in my opinion, one of the best superhero movies.

    – Death **OF** the Family / Endgame (These are two Joker-centric stories that were part of the batman series beginning in the “New 52,” DC’s relatively recent relaunch before the “Rebirth” era. I highly, highly recommend you read the entire Scott Snyder Batman series, because to me, it’s an almost flawless run for modern B-Man. Joker is almost a horror character in the issues he appears in.)

Joker appears *very* sparingly in these titles, but I’ll mention them because they’re all extremely good, not just as Batman titles but as stories in general:

    – Hush (J has a short but intense interaction. Book itself is just fine.)

    – The Long Halloween (A very short joyride for J. This book is a true noir Batman story though and could be my **single favorite comic ever**, tied with Killing Joke.)

The thing about good Batman stories is that they’re rarely uninteresting even if you don’t know the characters. I picked up a lot of knowledge by going “oh, who is this guy with a skull mask? I have no clue but it looks pretty metal.”

  3. The Killing Joke is of course a must on any Joker collection, check out A Death in the Family, Death of the Family and Endgame as well.

(They’re similar named but separate storylines, don’t be confused).

  4. Wonder Comics’ run of Young Justice

    The Rebirth version of Nightwing

And knock two iconic birds out with one stone with “Superman/Batman” (that’s how you enter the title in Google search. The actual books say “Superman Batman” on the covers)

These aren’t really Joker comics, obviously. But I’m new to DC comics too (and comics in general), and I really liked these. I encourage you to give any of them a shot
