[Comic Excerpt] As this sub’s #1 Wally West fan, I used to think that Barry Allen was boring, but now I understand why so many comic readers look up and relate to him (Justice League of America #173)

  1. To be fair, at the time, in order for Green Arrow’s liberal stances to make sense, they had to make other characters more conservative, even when they technically hadn’t been so much so prior.

  2. The flashes were quite messed up at that time. Barry had… opinions. Wally would make pick-up artists cringe with how creepy he was. Jay was based.

    Wait, Jay was a based.

  3. Wow this has definitely aged badly now that one of his nephews is black and he has a black family in the cwverse.

  4. If yer such a Wally fan, name three of his albums. No Googling. ;-P

Jokes aside, as someone who grew up with Wally, I never got the point when Didio brought Barry back (apart from “I’m the fucking Editor and I can bring my childhood characters back if I want to, dammit”). And Waid, Morrison or Johns proved they had a great character with Wally and made him interesting (and more importantly, they made him grow and evolve both as a human being and as a hero), with Barry as a “hallowed father figure” who even made special appearances. And that was ok for me.

Apart from that, I think we were lucky when Hawkman inherited the “token conservative” position for Giffen and DeMatteis’s JLI run…

  5. Now I understand why Ethan Van Sciver begged so hard to bring Barry Allen and [Hal Jordan](https://i.redd.it/ary1l28mpap71.jpg) back.

  6. Batman once said that Barry Allen is who he wishes he had been if his parents hadn’t died. I now believe that includes this.
