  1. I’m confident Isayama meant it as a comedic scene to lighten the dark mood, while also assuring the audiences of Erens feelings for Mikasa. Seeing people quote the line as something deep and meaningful is pretty funny.

  2. I’m gonna be downvoted but I honestly find the situation(not necessarily the line) to be tragic.

    I mean, it’s as stated in the chapter. Eren wants to be able to live and be with the people he cares about, but for the sake of the plan and simply the fact that he can never atone for what he’s done, he has to die.

    The whole “Don’t want Mikasa to move on” is another thing imo. But regardless of it, how you interpret it, Eren definitely wanted to be with his friends. It’s not just some badly written romance that’s the reason he didn’t want to die.
